Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

La Cava del Tequila will also launch the lineup of special events at the 14th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival with a Mexico Tequila Tasting on Sept. 25, the opening day of the festival at Walt Disney World Resort.

During the session, available by advance reservation, guests taste authentic Mexican tequila and learn about the history and traditions around its production from a true Tequila Master. La Cava del Tequila is located at the Mexico pavilion in World Showcase.

During opening weekend, other special events include a Cheese Seminar where guests learn about the cheeses of Spain from expert “fromager” Waldemar Albrecht-Luna, a Food and Wine Pairing at Tutto Italia Ristorante where guests discover a marriage of three regional wines with three tasting-size portions of Italian cuisine, a Sweet Sundays session with Pastry Chef Rick Griggs from Abacus in Dallas, and the big Saturday night Party for the Senses featuring Spanish cuisine.

Cheese Seminars, Party for the Senses, Food and Wine Pairings, Sweet Sundays and Mexico Tequila Tastings are just some of the many specially ticketed events that take place during the six entertainment-packed weeks of the festival Sept. 25-Nov. 8. There are Celebrating Family & Friends in the Kitchen sessions featuring celebrity culinarians who prepare a three-course luncheon, French Regional Lunches, Epcot Wine Schools and more. For information and reservations for the special events and programs, call 407/WDW-FEST (939-3378).

Meanwhile, every day throughout the festival, Epcot guests can taste fine cuisine and wines celebrating more than 20 “foodie” cities on six continents at marketplaces along the World Showcase promenade. Tapas-sized portions of regional specialties run $2 to $7 each, and recommended wines and beers make perfect pairings at each kiosk. The festival also includes live regional entertainment, daily wine and beer tastings, and the popular Eat to the Beat! concert series.

Guerlain began as a boutique on the ground floor of Hotel Meurice at Rue de Rivoli in Paris in 1828. It was the idea of its owner, Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain to capture the new mindset of the sophisticated Parisians of the day.It was also that drive in making the finest products using the best materials that has seen the company continue it success to this very day.

Make good products and never compromise on quality. As for the rest, stick to simple ideas and apply them scrupulously.
Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, founder Guerlain

It is this same commitment to quality that makes the inclusion of Guerlain into the Walt Disney World Resort vacation experience so fitting. The destination is the most popular tourist destination in the world. Although many come to the resort to experience the thrills of the attractions, there are more luxurious reasons to get away to the Walt Disney World Resort, and visiting one of only a handful of these exclusive Guerlain boutiques is reason enough for many.

In continuing the traditions set forth by Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, Natalia Vodianova inspired Guerlain’s creative director, Olivier Échaudemaison to conceive a warm, bohemian-inspired color collection for this fall. Olivier calls Natalia “an icon of color that brings energy and cheer when the nights are ling and the skies grey, and when the days are short and the sun away“.

In an effort to capture the radiance, warmth and richness that Natalia emanates, Guerlain offers a fall look defined by a fresh, smooth complexion, bright cheeks, eyes shimmering in a crimson glow and sparkling, rosy lips.

The products offered are quite beautiful as you remove them from their packaging. From the black velvet pouches to the ornate pattern-work on the cases, these products have been designed from within and without for the woman who desires the finest makeups and perfumes available today.

Volga Princess

Packaged in sumptuous black and gold packaging and within its own embossed velvet pouch is the Eyes and Lips Palette. Decorated with an intricate and delicate pattern, reminiscent of Slavic artwork, is the delicate makeup for eyes (soft pink and taupe shades) and lips (colors of rosewood and sparkling pink).

Tsarina

In line with the richly decorated palette of shimmering shades and all the flamboyance of an autumnal palace. The shades in these palettes were inspired by the sumptuous dresses of Eastern princesses. Faded orange, brick red, old rose and aubergine are dappled with a champagne motif contained in an exquisitely designed compact.

Rouge G de Guerlain

A symbol of the ultimate luxury lipstick, Rouge G de Guerlain welcomes two new limited edition shades, in perfect harmony with this season’s trends. Graziella: a peraly brick red and Giovanna: a pearly raspberry pink.

For Your Eyes

The limited edition, retractable eye pencil gives your eyes more infinite depth. While the two-brush mascara offerings amplify your eyes all around. Finally creating a sense of color harmony for your eyes is the new Ombres Eclat 4-shade eyeshadow palette.

Wrapping it up

A vacation always affords you the opportunity to get away and rejuvenate your body, mind and soul. Although the common perception of a Walt Disney World Resort vacation may be one of characters and popcorn, we like to highlight some of the more luxurious aspects of our favorite destination. A selection of the products offered in this collection are:

Volga Princess Eyes and Lips Palette (limited Edition) – $69.00
Tsarina Ombre Éclat 4 Shadows Eye Shadow (limited Edition) – $56.00
Russian Doll Radiant Blush (limited Edition) – $42.00

Walt Disney World offers world-class dining and shopping for the seasoned traveler; especially as you wander around the wonders of World Showcase at Epcot. La Signature at the France Pavilion certainly offers all of the wonderful products from Guerlain to spoil yourself on your next visit.
As we made our way towards the American Adventure, we saw the sign at the American Gardens Theater promoting a special holiday concert with the Voices of Liberty (VOL). The show was fantastic, as you can well see, with what seemed to be all of the singers involved with the VOL on stage and signing some great songs. And towards the end, there was a little surprise visit from some familiar friends.

All in all, it was a great day at Epcot and another wonderful memory for our family this past July 4. Do you have any 4th of July traditions that include some of Disney’s magic?

Authenticity and tradition were two key words when we embarked on the research and planning for our restaurants. Our goal is to staff each World Showcase restaurant with people from the country represented, so when you’re in Germany’s Biergarten, for instance, your hostess will greet you and take your order as if you’re in Hamburg or Munich.
Jens Dahlmann, executive chef for Epcot

Collaborating with chefs and restaurateurs from around the world, such as France’s celebrated Paul Bocuse, and Joachim Splichal’s Tutto Italia Ristorante, the Epcot restaurants are premier attractions at Walt Disney World Resort. From a spirited mariachi band andmole poblano in Mexico to belly dancing and spicy bastilla in Morocco, World Showcase offers gustatory globe-trotting – all in easy walking distance.

Our guests love the diverse dining adventures. We immerse our guests in traditional cultures, but with contemporary experiences.
Mandy DiGiammarino, general manager of Epcot Food & Beverage

Ordinarily, it might take a lifetime of vacations to sample the representative cooking of China, France, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Italy, Norway, Mexico and Morocco. For the World Showcase traveler, it’s a 1.1-mile walk around the lagoon, where all roads lead to authentic restaurants. Starting counterclockwise from Future World:

Canada

Le Cellier Steakhouse welcomes guests to a cozy space featuring steakhouse fare – favorites such as Prince Edward Island mussels, cheddar cheese soup, King salmon, salt-crusted prime rib and a veal t-bone. Ales and beers reflect Canada’s brewing history, and dessert wine feature Canadian ice wine and late harvest Rieslings.

United Kingdom

Rose & Crown Pub and Dining Room embodies “Otium Cum Dignitate,” or “leisure with dignity,” and sipping Bass Ale and Guinness Stout in the lively pub gets guests in the spirit. The adjacent restaurant offers herb-roasted lamb, vegetable curry, bangers and mash and other traditional dishes. The Rose & Crown’s outdoor seating is one of the best spots for viewing the nightly “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” fireworks and laser show.

For a quick bite, the Yorkshire County Fish Shop is a walk-up window for popular fish and chips.

France

Chefs de France has the lively atmosphere of an authentic brasserie along the Rue de Seine, with gastronomic creations of its three famous owner-chefs: Paul Bocuse, the late Gaston Lenôtre and Roger Verge, whose gourmet restaurants in Lyon, Paris and Cote d’Azur, respectively, are known around the world. Bocuse’s son, Jerome, oversees the culinary operations, and Executive Chef Bruno Vrignon trained under Bocuse in his Lyon restaurant. Braised lamb shank, roasted breast of duck, seared tuna and classic onion soup are menu among favorites.

Upstairs, Bistro de Paris showcases upscale French cuisine in a more intimate setting.

Morocco

Restaurant Marrakesh serves flavorful specialties, using a long list of herbs and spices including saffron, a key ingredient in many Moroccan dishes. A favorite appetizer isbastilla , or fried pastry, that combines layers of the pastry with chicken seasoned with almonds, powdered sugar and cinnamon. The dessert menu includesbastilla au lait etamandes , with cream and toasted almonds and traditional Moroccan mint tea. During lunch and dinner, a belly dancer entertains with live Moroccan music.

Tangierine Café, located on the right side of the entrance to the showcase, specializes in quick-service specialties such as shawarma, sandwiches made from slow-roasted chicken, beef or lamb, served with hummus and tzatziki.

Japan

On the top floor of the Japan pavilion is Tokyo Dining and adjacent Teppan Edo teppanyaki dining rooms. With sleek interiors and stylish costuming for chefs and servers, both restaurants infuse authentic Japanese hospitality with a dash of hipness.

The popular teppanyaki rooms feature show-style cooking along with traditional teppan dishes. Tokyo Dining is a 140-seat dining room with a centerpiece “show stage” where diners can watch the sushi chefs in action. Nearly 50 varieties of sushi and sashimi and six varieties of sake are on the menu, along with tempura and grilled steaks and seafood.

Overlooking tranquil gardens, the Yakitori House features yakitori (broiled skewers of chicken basted with teriyaki sauce) and beef soba (paper-thin beef simmered in a spicy sauce and served with noodles). Modeled after a teahouse in the Katsura Summer Palace in Kyoto, the Yakitori House also serves such uniquely Japanese desserts as green tea and ginger ice cream.

Italy

In the Italy pavilion, Tutto Italia (“everything Italian”) Ristorante showcases cuisine from different regions of Italy, with a seasonal menu with freshly made breads and pastries, handmade mozzarella and pasta, and an array of Italian wines. But favorites that remain on the menu include eggplant Parmesan, fried calamari, penne Caprese, cannelloni al forno and spaghetti with veal meatballs. And sweet endings like classic tiramisu and cannoli are hits, as are gelati and sorbetti.

My inspiration for Tutto Italia was the incredible variety of cuisines that I have enjoyed during my visits to Italy. I wanted to distill that experience and create a restaurant with some of my favorite dishes.
Chef Joachim Splichal of California-based Patina Group, which operates the restaurant

Tuxedoed waiters create the ambience of big-city dining in the traditional restaurants in Rome and Milan. On cooler Florida days, the tables on the patio are wonderful for al fresco dining under umbrellas.

Plans are in the works for further renovations of the restaurant, one of the most popular in Epcot World Showcase.

Germany

A sumptuous buffet features authentic German cuisine. It’s a home-cooked dining experience, with guests served from skillets and crock pots surrounded by a lively Octoberfest celebration. The chef offers salads from Bavarian cabbage to warm German potato salad; and main dishes such as roasted chicken, pork shank, homemade spaetzle, white veal sausages, salmon with lemon-dill sauce and carved pork roast. Sweet endings include Black Forest cake and apple strudel.

Mexico

Unlike most Mexican restaurants in the United States, you’ll not find nachos at the San Angel Inn in Epcot, because, says manager Richard Debler, they are not authentic Mexican dishes. And Debler was trained in his family’s restaurant in Mexico City.

Chocolate may sound like an unorthodox ingredient to use with chicken, but the mole poblano prepared according to a San Angel Inn recipe combines chile ancho, chile passilla, green tomatoes, ground tortillas, coriander seed and 11 other spices with cocoa for a rich sauce in which chicken is simmered until tender. Fresh tortillas are made every day and filled with duck marinated with tamarind sauce and topped with avocado, pineapple and chives.

A new tequila bar adjacent to the restaurant offers a taste of the popular beverage.

In the Cantina de San Angel, just outside the pyramid entrance to Mexico, you can find nachos, burritos and tacos, as well as sweet churros (donuts rolled in cinnamon and powdered sugar), frozen margaritas and Mexican beer.

China

Epicurean adventures into five Chinese provinces await World Showcase travelers at the 250-seat Nine Dragons Restaurant where servers from China enjoy interacting with guests. (Placemats are a conversation starter with Chinese writing symbols and their evolution through centuries.)

The menu showcases authentic Chinese cuisine, but with a lighter, contemporary touch. You can still order traditional appetizers such as pot stickers and eggrolls, but a favorite is the Dioa Yu Tai cucumber salad, with a light spice and sweet-and-sour vinaigrette. Or the crisp shrimp and taro “lollipops,” deep-fried and served on a stick.

Entrées range from traditional such as fried rice, sweet and sour chicken and kung pao chicken, but more contemporary Asian fare include peppery shrimp with spinach noodles, spit-roasted Beijing chicken with mashed taro and a mix-and-match noodle sampler.

The lobby features etched glass and gold artwork on one wall, depicting a pair of dragons playing with a golden ball. (The ball represents wisdom, and the dragons, representing people, are forever chasing it.) The dining room is brightened with colorful lanterns in pale greens, blues and reds and elegant glass sculptures from China backlit on one wall.

Next door, the 200-seat Lotus Blossom Cafe offers counter-service. And the Joy of Tea outdoor cart features hot and cold teas, trendy frozen green tea concoctions and alcoholic drinks such as plum wine and wine green tea slush.

Norway

“Help yourself to the koldtbord” (cold table) is the catch phrase in Akershus Royal Banquet Hall where guests are encouraged to make multiple trips to the table. The seafood, cold meats and cheeses provide an appetizing beginning for this Norwegian-inspired dining experience.

Next come the smarvarmt, or hot dishes. A sampling of these delights would include pork shank, mustard-glazed grilled salmon and lamb stew.

There’s a “Princess Storybook” theme at breakfast, lunch and dinner starring Belle, Jasmine, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Pocahontas, Mulan, Cinderella, Ariel, Alice and Mary Poppins.

Scandinavian sweets and sandwiches are available across the pavilion courtyard at the Kringla Bakery and Cafe. Popular palate pleasers include strawberry cake; a cloudberry-filled cream horn; Skol Bread, a cream and coconut treat; and the trademark offering, the kringla, a sweet pretzel. Norwegian beer also is available.

America’s Choice

Future World restaurants feature all-American fare. Electric Umbrella offers salads, chicken sandwiches and burgers, all which can be “topped” at a central toppings and condiments bar.

Farmer Mickey, Pluto and Chip ‘n Dale present beef, seafood and poultry dishes served family style for dinner at The Land’s revolving restaurant,Garden Grill. Below the Garden Grill, and below the pavilion’s enormous central skylight, is Sunshine Seasons, where four shops offer a diverse selection of fast-casual dining options.

Serving the only American food in World Showcase, the Liberty Inn bill of fare represents cooking at its simplest – hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, french fries and, of course, Coca-Cola.

Coral Reef Restaurant is part of The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion in Future World, featuring seafood specialties as well as steaks.

Meals For Children

Special meals for children 9 and under can be found throughout Epcot, offering entrées they are familiar with: from quesadillas in Mexico to grilled fish at Coral Reef Restaurant.

Kids who enjoy adventures in eating won’t be disappointed, either. They can try pot stickers in China; Japan’s tempura, shrimp and fresh vegetables dipped in a light batter and fried; or France’s croquette de boeuf en brioche (a fancy hamburger).

Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

Adding even more diversity to the mix for dining experiences is the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. The six-week-long festival attracts a diverse audience of more than 1 million guests each fall, from wine connoisseurs and epicures to neophytes primed to boost their wine IQs. Beer aficionados can raise their steins at several tasting locations.

There’s no other festival environment in the world like ours. From the picturesque World Showcase Lagoon to the authentic architecture that showcases many cultures, it’s an ideal backdrop for the exceptional culinary and wine-related talent of Walt Disney World Resort and for the great celebrity chefs and wine connoisseurs who join us each year.
Chef Dahlmann

Wrapping it up

I have eaten at almost everyone of the major restaurants listed above. Many are fine, some forgettable and a few exceptional. This past Father’s Day we made our way to Chefs de France to see Remy and have a wonderful meal; unfortunately Remy does not work on Sunday’s to my daughters dismay and my great ire. The food, however, was quite nice and the view of the promenade was spectacular.

If you love food, my favorite restaurants in World Showcase are Le Cellier and Tutto Italia. The food and service at both have always been head and shoulders above the rest of the restaurants in Epcot and the Food and Wine Festival is not to be missed. There are so many culinary experiences to be sampled throughout the festival, you can visit several times without having to taste the same food twice.

We all know and love the Walt Disney World Resort as a magical destination to escape into the imaginative world of Walt Disney. The resort is also home to some of the world’s most luxurious indulgences as well. Why at Epcot alone, you can find one of only a smattering of official boutiques from one of the world’s oldest perfumeries.

The House of Guerlain

The House of Guerlain was founded in 1828, when Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain opened his perfume store on 42, rue de Rivoli in Paris. As both the founder and first perfumer of the house, Pierre-François composed and manufactured custom fragrances with the help of his two sons, Aimé and Gabriel. Through continued success and the patronage of members in high society, Guerlain opened its flagship store at 15, rue de la Paix in 1840, and put its mark on the Parisian fashion scene.

The House of Guerlain was owned and managed by members of the Guerlain family from 1828 to 1994. It was acquired in 1994 by the LVMH group, a multinational investment corporation specializing in luxury brands.

Guerlain’s creations have long influenced the trends of perfumery with fragrances such as Jicky, Shalimar, and Vétiver. Guerlain is among the few older houses that exist solely to produce and market perfumes. Since its foundation in 1828 Guerlain has created over 300 fragrances.

Making Scents

In the world of perfumery, few Houses can pride themselves on such exceptional longevity. Entering the Guerlain universe means crossing the threshold into an exceptional world where respect for tradition and a feel for innovation weave the most beautiful creations. This dynasty of perfumers, boasting five generations of creators, has endured through 180 years of history. It has cultivated the spirit of Guerlain with unwavering principles: the use of nothing but precious ingredients, refinement in every detail, the application of time-tested, artisanal knowledge and the unique talent for satisfying the demands of its clients.

Make good products, never compromise on quality. Always stick to simple ideas and apply them scrupulously.
This was the creed of the brand’s founder, Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain. A creed and passion which, since 1828, have been transmitted at Guerlain from generation to generation.

The entire Guerlain adventure could be summed up in a few words: making the art of beauty a true art de vivre and responding to modernity with creativity. Guerlain perfumes are unique because their autographs is inimitable. This stamp is a unique olfactory harmony, called “Guerlinade”. It is unique to Guerlain perfumers and jealously guarded by them.

From some 760 fragrant creations, there are those that have transcended time and continue to perfume the air with their exceptional scent. Among them, Eau de Cologne Impériale, Jicky, L’Heure Bleue, Mitsouko, Shalimar, Vol de Nuit, Vega, Djedi, Samsara, Vetiver and, more recently, creations that promise to be the icons of tomorrow – Insolence and L’Instant de Guerlain.

To create prefumes that defy time and fashion, you have to invest in high quality raw materials. Jean-Paul Guerlain, like his ancestors, gives preference to natural essences (like bergamot, tonka beans and vanilla) only considering synthetic products as a complement.

Baccarat Crystal

Guerlain perfume bottles are timeless and innovative works of art that are ideal to give someone as a present or to collect. The majority of the older bottlers were created by Raymond Guerlain and Baccarat. Currently, they are designed by the sculptor Robert Granai who has been creating exclusively for Guerlain since Parure in 1975

In the eyes of the world, Guerlain symbolises Perfume. The House is also famous for its skincare products, Super Aqua-Serum, Success Future and Orchidée Impériale ranges; and its make-up products, such as Terracotta, Meteorites, and KissKiss lipstick.

The Guerlain Institutes, place of prestige where the know-how has reached an international renown, completes the activity of this brand totally dedicated to beauty.

A New Limited Edition

In a continuing tradition of Guerlain, this week marks the debut of a new fragrance which happens to coincide with the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival – La Petite Robe Noire (The Little Black Dress). This new fragrance is absolutely wonderful and will be released to only a few select boutiques; the boutique at Epcot will only be receiving 20 bottles for sale.

A pure exercise in style, La Petite Robe Noire by Guerlain is both timeless and audaciously innovative, revealing an enchantingly fresh composition. This fruity-floral fragrance subtly melds the tart energy of Sicilian lemon with tender almond notes, elegantly segueing into roses and powerful licorice. The juice adds character with a few pinches of smoky tea and patchouli leaves, lingering on with a caress of musk and vanilla.

The bottle, in chic shades of black, is topped by an inverted heart top, an update of the House’s mythic model. Adding an extra touch of charm is a little black dress on the bottle, designed and signed by artist Serge Mansau.

Wrapping it up

Guerlain is only one example of a larger trend at the Walt Disney World Resort that focuses on providing the best destination travel for all its guests. With special events peppered throughout the year it is easy to expand your horizons for luxurious indulgences on your next trip to the Walt Disney World Resort.

There is a new style of attraction happening at Epcot and it is based around one of the oldest games played by kids…the scavenger hunt. The Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure is based around the hit show Kim Possible, who enlists you to help save the world, showcase.

The Backstory

The story is that the world is in danger and Kim needs your help to track down clues and solves the puzzles throughout the pavilions all around World Showcase at Epcot. All agents get who sign up get a Verizon “cel phone” that provides the assignments, clues and ultimately helps you save the day. The video below contains just small portion of the content used in helping you solve the mystery.

Wrapping it Up

This is a great way to spend some time in Epcot and certainly very different from the usual visit to a Disney park. It is very engaging and you can spend as much time as you wish solving assignments, but be forewarned, you may miss out on some of the other great stuff going on in the parks. The adventure is completely self-guided and is suitable for kids of all ages. The Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure is a great addition to the park and another great way to make those magical memories while you are visiting Walt Disney World.

Some of the best rides around the Walt Disney World Resort are somewhat hidden from the main walkways. The Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros, formerly The River of Time, is one of those attractions.

As you enter the pyramid, wind your way to the back of the square and there on the left, you will find the entrance to this wonderful ride. Originally planned as a way to showcase the story of Mexico, it has recently been upgraded with the Three Caballeros which makes it even more fun.

The ride begins, very much like the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disneyland, on a moonlit river winding its way through diners, shoppers and a grand pyramid before entering into the rest of the ride. Two of The Three Caballeros, Panchito and Jose Carioca, greet you as you enter the tunnel as they begin their search for Donal Duck who has apparently gone missing.

The rest of the ride is tracking down Donal Duck, who happens to be enjoying himself with all of the wonders of Mexico; from the historical sites and friendly people to the local cuisine and cliff diving. Donald is having the time of his life, but his friends catch up with him just in time for a rousing closing musical number of their signature song -- The Three Caballeros.
