The Walt Disney Co. has had a stake in UTV for some time now. ContentSutra is reporting that Disney now has taken a majority stake in India’s first integrated global media and entertainment company.
UTV is India’s only diversified media and entertainment company with content creation abilities across platforms and genres. It has subsidiaries with offices across India, Mauritius, UK USA and Japan. UTV is among the top 3 movie production companies in India as well as being a major television content generator while also creating a strong presence in the gaming industry (purported to have 60% of the marketshare in India).
All of Disney’s theatrical releases in India are handled by UTV while Disney has taken over worldwide distribution of many of UTV’s popular properties.
Although Disney owns 59% of the company their voting share is capped at 32% with the UTV owners capable of a buyback of a percentage of the outstanding shares.
Wrapping it up
This is certainly an interesting development for the company. Teaching English in China using Disney properties, investments in India and more – Disney is certainly making headway into the Asian markets.
