We celebrate Mickey Mouse’s birthday on this day in commemoration of the debut of Steamboat Willie. Although it was not the first cartoon short Mickey Mouse appeared in (Plane Crazy and Gallopin’ Gaucho were both produced before but could not find distribution), it was the first to use synchronized sound that started the Disney Brothers on a meteoric rise that continues to this very day.

Directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks it was created as a parody of another film by Buster Keaton entitled Steamboat Bill Jr.
