News broke last night that Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man franchise will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and an as-yet-to-be cast new Spider-Man will appear in an upcoming Marvel film. Speculation is that Spider-Man will make his appearance in Captain America: Civil War due to the large part he played in the comic.

Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.

Sony will also release a new Spider-Man film on July 28, 2017. Marvel’s Kevin Feige will be on board with Sony’s execs as a producer and will collaborate with the Sony team on the new direction of Spider-Man.

We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man.
Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment

So, after much speculation across the Marvel fandom, it looks like we will get our web-slingermore involved in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since he is one of my favorite characters, I am hopeful, and anxious, as to how he is incorporated into these storylines.
