Today we celebrate the memory and honor those who have given the last full measure in defense of this nation. Thanks most of all to all who have served and the families of those who have paid the ultimate price for our defense of our great nation. Let us remember the reason for today’s celebration.

Just a little patriotic music from the great Fife and Drum Corps at Epcot. Nothing like a little great music to get you in the holiday feeling – don’t mind the introductory Christmas tune, it really is mostly some patriotic ditties from these talented musicians.

History

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

Wrapping it up

We owe a debt to all the brave men and women of our armed services – both living and deceased. Today, if you see someone in a uniform, shake their hand and say thanks. They are true American heroes.
